The motor vehicle supplier sector-the companies that design, engineer uiid manufacture the vast majority of the parts that go into today's vehicles-has become the backbone of the motor vehicle assembly industry, employing substantially mon- people than the number employed by the assemblers. A comprehensive report by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), undertaken at the request of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), analyy.es the employment and economic contribution of these supplier-related jobs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The relatively high number of jobs impacted by the supplier sector in this country, their broad dispersion across various industries and the contribution these jobs make to the national economy comprise the most important findings of the study.
"The study's findings make it clear that despite the many challenges facing our industry, automotive suppliers account lor more jobs-and provide more economic well-being to more Americans-than any other manufacturing sector," said Bob McKenna, MEMA president and CEO.
The study also showed that auto supplier jobs are good jobs, providing $252 billion in compensation, or more than $45,000 in average annual compensation per industry worker. The complete study is available on MEMAs new government affairs website, www.automotivesupplier.org, and the Center for Automotive Research website, www.cargroup.org.
